Zonta Club of Prince George's County - Our History

IN THE BEGINNING ...
Carol Beaver, a Centurion, of the Zonta Club of the District of Columbia, embraced the vision to charter a club in Prince George's County Area.

OUR FIRST PRESIDENT
Marcia Porterfield was elected the Charter President with an official meeting blessed by County Executive, Paris Glendening, in 1984. Marcia Porterfield and Peg Ingram remain among the charter members.

Our club has been fortunate to have the leadership of women of commitment who exemplify the goals and objectives of ZONTA International. The women, who have served as our Club Presidents, include Louise Blauvelt, Peg Ingram, Joan Wilson, Carolyn Cooper, Charlyn Richardson, and Carol Gaines. Rachele Gaines currently serves as President.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE AND COMMITMENT
We are deeply committed to 'Hands-On' Service Projects.   In the past, we have provided Teddy Bears to Children s Hospital. We have presented Holiday Parties at Shepherd's Cove, a safe haven and shelter for homeless women and children.
Our chapter has presented charitable donations to the Family Crisis Center, the Stephanie Roper Foundation, Zonta International Summit on Violence Against Women, Healthy Families Prince George's County ZONTA Baby Care program, and The Compassion Center.
Many hours have been volunteered at the Manor Care Nursing Center, Magnolia Nursing Home, and Doctors Community Hospital.

"PASSING ON" ...
A HISTORY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Our pride and joy is our Z Club, currently located at the Queen Anne School. Z Club is a vehicle whereby students from local area high schools, such as Eleanor Roosevelt, (and Largo in the past), earn Maryland State Department of Education credit toward graduation by volunteering to assist Zonta Clubs with their Community Service Projects. Our Z Club was chartered in 1994. The Current Z Club President is Frika L. Robinson.

A HISTORY OF MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY
Prince George's County Area Club of ZONTA International Community Service Projects and Fundraising projects included raffles, flea markets,(art auction, white elephant sales, live and silent auctions, a fashion show extravaganza, a Women's Fair, selling House and People Pins, and a Jazz Brunch.

A HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL INVOLVEMENT
In 1997, the PGCAC of ZONTA International was invited by the White House to attend an executive briefing to establish dialogue With ZONTA International and our International President, Chief Folake Solanke, SAN. of Nigeria. The White House recognized our club by inviting our Past President, Carol Gaines, to serve on various special committees.

A HISTORY OF LOOKING FORWARD ...
Each year, the Club has made donations to the ZONTA International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards, which are scholarships granted to women in graduate aerospace-related sciences and engineering. Our club supports UNIFEM which grants aid to women in underdeveloped countries through the auspices of the United Nations.
